A friend in Basel sent me her CV last spring and asked a simple question: why was she getting replies from recruiters in Zurich but silence from employers in Bern? Same person, same experience, same degree. The only difference was language. Her CV and cover letter were in English, and for Zurich’s international employers that … Read more
In January I opened my banking app on a Sunday night, looked at the total, and felt that specific, sinking feeling you only get when the month still has nine days left in it. I was not broke. I was disorganised. Money was leaving in small, forgettable amounts — a streaming service I had not … Read more
Three myths about personal statements, all wrong in useful ways. Myth one: admissions tutors want a dramatic life story. They do not. They want evidence that you will thrive on their specific course, and a quiet paragraph about the right module beats a dramatic paragraph about the wrong one. Myth two: AI will write it … Read more
My friend Ana runs a tiny ceramics studio in Porto, and last month she asked me for something that sounded simple: a poster for her Saturday open studio, plus a few Instagram images that did not look like stock photos. She had never used an AI image tool before, she did not want to learn … Read more
The first thing I learned about job hunting in Norway did not come from a tool. It came from a hiring manager in Oslo who told me, over coffee, that she bins CVs that open with “I am a highly motivated team player.” She said it with the weariness of someone who has read that … Read more
Tuesday, 6:40 p.m. I opened the fridge and found the usual suspects: half a cabbage, three eggs, a packet of smoked sausage that was two days from its date, and a jar of pickles nobody in the house will admit to buying. Dinner needed to exist in forty minutes, and nobody wanted to decide what … Read more
Day one, 8:04 a.m. My phone told me the truth I already knew: 4 hours 47 minutes of screen time yesterday, 132 pickups, and most of it was not work. It was the loop — news, short video, inbox, repeat — with nothing to show for it at the end. So I did the slightly … Read more
My side project nearly died in a spreadsheet. I was running a small website relaunch with one collaborator, fourteen tasks, and a deadline that kept sliding because nobody owned anything. The work lived in three places: a Google Doc, a WhatsApp thread, and my head. When I finally admitted the system was the problem, I … Read more
Myth: Finland hires on merit alone, so a good CV is enough. Reality: Finland hires on trust, fit and Finnish context — and a good CV that ignores all three will sit unread in a recruiter’s inbox. I learned this the slow way, by testing the job-search stack below as if I were actually applying. … Read more
I nearly missed a train in Lyon because my itinerary was too perfect. It was a Tuesday in June, raining sideways, and I had a colour-coded plan that told me to be at a silk workshop at 10:00, a market at 11:30 and a viewpoint at 13:00. What it did not tell me was that … Read more
