Type a few words into Midjourney and you get magic. Type the right few words and you get exactly the image you pictured in your head. These Midjourney prompts for beginners are designed to give you stunning results on your very first tries — just copy, paste after /imagine, and watch what happens.
New to AI image tools in general? Our Midjourney vs DALL-E vs Stable Diffusion comparison explains which tool fits which job, and our beginner’s guide to prompt engineering teaches the underlying skill behind every prompt below.
How Midjourney prompts work
A good Midjourney prompt has three ingredients: subject (what you want to see), style (photorealistic, oil painting, 3D cartoon…) and details (lighting, mood, colours). You can also add parameters at the end — the most useful one for beginners is --ar for aspect ratio: --ar 16:9 for wide banners, --ar 1:1 for square social posts, --ar 4:5 for portraits.
Don’t chase perfection on the first generation. Midjourney gives you four variations — pick the closest, hit Vary, and iterate. That’s the whole workflow.
Portrait prompts
Portraits are the perfect warm-up: faces reveal instantly whether your prompt is working.
- Professional headshot: “Professional headshot of a smiling woman in her 30s, soft studio lighting, blurred office background, photorealistic, 85mm lens –ar 4:5”
- Cinematic character: “Cinematic portrait of an elderly fisherman with a weathered face, dramatic side lighting, dark background, ultra detailed –ar 4:5”
- Golden-hour joy: “A joyful toddler laughing in a sunflower field, golden hour sunlight, shallow depth of field, photorealistic –ar 4:5”
- Fantasy queen: “Fantasy portrait of an elven queen, intricate silver crown, glowing forest background, digital painting, highly detailed –ar 2:3”

- Comic hero: “Superhero portrait, man in a red cape standing on a rooftop at night, city lights below, comic book style, dynamic pose –ar 2:3”
Logo & branding prompts
One honest warning: Midjourney still mangles text inside images. Keep any words in your logo extremely short — or add the typography later in Canva.

- Tech startup: “Modern logo for a tech startup, abstract geometric letter mark, blue gradient, clean and professional, flat design –ar 1:1”
- Craft brewery badge: “Vintage badge logo for a craft brewery, hop illustration, retro style, black and gold, white background –ar 1:1”
- Luxury monogram: “Elegant monogram logo, two letters intertwined, gold on dark green, luxury brand style, minimal –ar 1:1”
- Kids’ shop mascot: “Playful logo for a children’s toy shop, cute smiling sun mascot, bright colours, flat design –ar 1:1”
- Business card mockup: “Business card mockup for a freelance photographer, minimalist layout, small camera icon, dark elegant theme, on a wooden desk –ar 16:9”
Product photography prompts
Small businesses: these prompts create product shots that look like you hired a studio.

Fun creative experiments
Once the basics click, try something impossible — this is where Midjourney truly shines.

6 beginner tips for better images
- Start simple, then add details. Generate the basic idea first; add lighting and style words in the next iteration.
- Name a style explicitly. “Photorealistic”, “oil painting”, “watercolour” or “cyberpunk” changes everything.
- Describe the light. “Golden hour”, “soft studio lighting” and “dramatic side lighting” are the fastest quality upgrades.
- Use –ar deliberately. Match the aspect ratio to where the image will live: 16:9 for banners, 1:1 for Instagram, 4:5 for Pinterest.
- Vary, don’t restart. The V1–V4 and vary buttons explore around a good result — much faster than writing a new prompt from scratch.
- Keep text out of images. Short words sometimes work; sentences almost never do. Add typography afterwards in an editor.
Frequently asked questions
Is Midjourney free?
Midjourney currently requires a paid subscription — there’s no permanent free tier. If you want free alternatives, our AI image generator comparison lists options with free plans.
Which Midjourney version should I use?
Use the latest default model (check with /settings). Newer versions understand natural language much better, so you can write prompts as plain sentences.
Can I use Midjourney images commercially?
Paid subscribers generally own the images they create, but always check the current terms of service — especially for client work or merchandise.
Why do faces and hands look weird sometimes?
It’s the classic AI weakness. Fix it by adding “ultra detailed”, generating at higher quality, or simply re-rolling — most generations are fine.
Do these prompts work in other image generators?
Mostly, yes. The subject and style descriptions transfer well to DALL-E, Stable Diffusion and Adobe Firefly. Only the --ar parameter is Midjourney-specific — in other tools, choose the aspect ratio in the tool’s own settings instead.
